Tale of Two Sages – Karthighai
The incarnation of Sarangam,
Chola era’s composer of six prabhandam,
Birthday celebrations for a sage,
A vaishnavite, a warrior with a rage,
Promised daily to feed devotees thousand,
Turned to robbery to keep word till the end,
Put to test by Mahalakshmi and Vishnu – Lord of all power,
Eight worded hymns transformed him into – Thirumangai Azhvar,
Taught us to think of Narayana in distress,
A whole hearted faith to ward off evil fate and duress.
The Srivatsa mark born here on Earth,
Found near paddy fields into pannar birth,
Melody emanating from the banks of kaveri river,
Sang songs praising Ranga forever,
Always seen with a yazh in the hand,
His hurt visible on Sri’s head band,
Entered temple on priest’s shoulders,
Called Muni Vahanar by his friends and peers,
Beholding SriRangan foot to crown,
His eyes seized nothing else ever known,
As a flame he became one with the Lord,
Thiruappan Azhvar attained spiritual abode.
Two illuminating motives,
For Karthighai luminous,
A celebration of spiritual sages,
Whose Vishnu hymns guide us through ages.
