To Myself

To Myself

A few irrational thoughts creep into the mind,
Nothing seems to quell the words unkind,
No one seems to do things right,
Everything seems to work up a fight.

The thoughts change to pain,
To no useful, meaningful gain,
Try as I may, to easy it away,
The negations somehow get its way.

For reasons unknown,
The world seems to frown,
I close my eyes to seek solace,
To but out of this unwanted race.

Only to find tilting towards feeling of unworthiness,
Rational I says the path is meaningless.

Need to understand, what eyes and ears receive,
That it’s has to be channelized through a positive sieve,
To reiterate that I, the self has use,
No one decide who is a rotten fuse.

Need to tell this to myself every day,
Everything happens as unknown reasons play.

Old dreams and actions are redundant,
It is the root cause for all thoughts tangent,
Every year springs new dreams,
Every month bounces ideas by the reams.

It’s up to oneself to perceive the doable,
Work and walk trying to grasp the attainable,
Then the words will mellow,
Thoughts and voice will not bellow.

Life may get an understandable meaning,
One might grow old as a content being.

Reminiscence with a song

Reminiscence with a Song

 An old song record singing,
Memories so many come ringing,
Music has a melodious knack,
To evoke recollections stored deep in a rack.

Introductory track playing in a music store,
Many a feet tapping, wanting more,
Some people bold enough to acquire,
To change one’s mood as pleasant as required.

A developing infant also danced to the melody,
The precious has a sudden queer appetency,
Pastries, juice and crepe was presented,
Quenching the hunger unprecedented.

The song scrapbook became our travel buddy,
Long drives to sundry beach dipped in melody,
Tune mingles with strange formations of limestone,
Or wheels jingled about with musical sand dunes.

A decade quickly passed by,
The track once again sing its lullaby,
Even the papers fluttered to the known beat,
The young boy nodded his head, tapping his feet.

Sulky Face

Sulky Face

A day dawns bright,

Why do you fight?

A recognition of your efforts,

But you tear it to tatters.

Why can’t you be happy and glee,

At least try to make a cheer,

Instead you turn beds and tables,

Awards are a matter of pride, a moral ridden fable.

You have a numerous more laurels to win,

We wait to see you walk above the average din,

As a parent each medal is a possession to adore,

Secretly hoping to see you blessed with plenty more.

You sulk and pull away,

Only to destroys your mother’s special day,

Notice how she worked double hard,

Preparing dinner even before sun’s ray part.

At least for your parent’s sake,

Smile a bit and try to enjoy the break,

Fast track your school work just one day,

After all the day is a holiday!

A Note to You

A Note to You

Each day walked away quietly,
With the thought to pen you a few words I wrote,
Take comfort,
Your little girls are soaring high and mighty,
Take pride,
Now young women, the world will take note of them,
One will Master the knowledge conquest,
The other will start her journey to outshine the rest,
Even though,
You stand to lose their daily company,
You will be compensated by their awards and laurels many.
So smile a mile each with a tune to tute,
Your penance start reaping glorious fruits.

Valentine's Day

Valentine’s Day

Voluminous flower bouquets travelling around,

Baskets of exquisite chocolate and cookies round,

Fragrance pleasing to the senses,

Even the sun reduces glaring fences.

Swirl around with open eyes,

See a streaks of red and pink chic fines,

Taking in the feeling with a hint of dizziness,

For this expression is a day’s fizziness.

True to its name,

Of St. Valentine fame,

Anonymous love notes,

Fill the couriers and posts.

Being special not a day’s affair,

But every day is to be appreciated with fanfare,

Smooth talk and lost causes of laughter,

Gather enough to replay it all year.

No tear creep the eye of your loved one,

Fill the day’s memory with happiness by the ton,

Notice the certain happening that bring gleam,

For you may need to recreate the dream.

Let the air be fresh with love today,

Refresh it with lovely efforts every day,

The day seals the delight in one’s company,

May the essence of valentine continue for years and many.

Dreams about the past

Dreams about the past

I close my drowsy eyes,
And reality goes to sleep,
Opening a door where dreams lie,
Action and events dear to my heart deep.

Waking up to the call of a lapwing,
School kids race to catch the school bus,
Feeling the cool breeze of northern spring,
Buying milk and bread every morning without a fuss.

Chill dream of rolling fog reducing visibility,
Sights and smell of carrot halwa rose,
Warm winter afternoon promoting compatibility,
Cold morning hampering rouse.

Dreams of festival as a community affair,
Holidays spent meeting fellow mortals,
Streets and shops lit up till they glare,
Sometimes grouping to enter different portals.

Standing amongst people thoroughly friendly,
Friends who couldn’t leave you in grief,
Acquaintances helping to the edge of being meddley,
Fellows who encourage your avocation even if it’s brief.

Winds change directions,
Perceiving self in a different locus,
I spin and twirl in meditation,
Ceasing the dream to bring NOW into focus.

A mother’s elation

A mother’s elation

She is standing guard outside,

When her child pens knowledge inside,

Hours pass under nature’s garden,

Sun beating down without pardon.

Then the time crawls to the finish line,

Kids tie the papers with twine,

The mother’s glance on the watch increases,

As time she will see her child decreases.

Then suddenly the students tumble to the gate,

To relax and rejuvenate,

Mother’s eyes searches her precious,

Trying to gauge the teen’s mood precarious.

Her eyes lit up like morning dawn,

As she sees her galloping fawn,

The child is delighted,

The mother is contented.

Her long wait bears fruits,

Her child has a merry tune to toot,

Both return to the nest elated,

Until next time when the process gets repeated.

Exam Centre

Exam Centre

The entrance to the exam centre,

Filled with parents in grim candour,

Their wards are sitting inside,

To appear for an exam of a kind.

Young minds from ends of the moon,

Ready to spend a Sunday afternoon,

Solving questions of subjects varied,

Hoping their answers are not parried.

Outside the exam epicentre,

Stood the matriarchs in centre,

Wondering how their kids fair?

Answers known or give a scare?

Grouped together are some moms,

Deep in discussions on topics lump sum,

Future exams and their implications,

Syllabus and books to use for preparations.

Parents waiting for hours on end,

Not bothered about their Sunday is spent,

Happy to find a place to sit,

Grateful for the sun in a cloud pit.

At last the exam concluded,

Students file out of the rooms exhausted,

Both parents and kids look grateful,

Hoping their efforts are fruitful!

Gift to Dad

Gift to Dad

What to gift you Dad!

 Not one good enough

Shoes for the feet that

Helped me fly,

Shirt for the shoulder that

Held me high,

Watch for the hand that,

Taught me numbers,

Or a bracelet for the hand that

Straightened the bow legs,

Shades for the eyes that

Showed me parks and zoos,

Belt for the tummy that

Soothed a baby to sleep,

Oh! What gift do I give you,

Nothing is right for you,

So with rainbow in skies,

And bouquets of bloom,

Wish you dance to every happy tune,

With a room full of well-wishers,

Singing Happy Birthday To You !!!

Are We Educated Enough!

Are We Educated Enough!!

In India, the engineer, doctor and the CA hold the top rank in the future paths to pursue for a child. Anything else, people have second looks, thoughts, are you not good enough for the top courses?

A child who was a science talent award winner, now is running a business in organic farming. Immediately people wonder – what happened, why not a scientist or engineer. Why are we Indians’ so narrow minded, shallow?

We criticize the west for many things, but their children are holistically ready for life when they turn 18 – 19 years old. They are taught basic survival skills of life - cooking, sewing, personal finances – everything to start living alone once you turn into a major.

You pass out of high school you are ready to face the world – in every way. Young minds having new ideas, a youthful personal grit to see the idea through, turn the idea into a business. The venture might fail but the endearing spirit lives on to try again.

The India schooling should also change to teach the kids to live lives, save money. Even if the school teaches, the parent’s raise eyebrow, wondering if its necessary. Or there is a test/ exam at the end of the course, which puts off the joy of learning for the kids. The spirit of experimenting should be encouraged.

In the present global environment it’s a necessary art & skill. Why should only a businessman’s son/daughter learn the craft to do business? A trader teaches his son the nuances of the stock market. Whereas the large majority of Indian population, the salaried class, teaches its kids to slog and work and overwork for someone else for 25-30 years. Then retire to the care of their children, waiting for the next generation to take care of them.

 WHY ???

I think every child in a school that has M.Tech and Phd teachers should teach the kids the basis of finances (personal and global). What is it to start a business, the beginning of trading, investing, saving. The children should also make a sincere effort to try and find out- what is it to do out of the ordinary.

Parents should encourage out of box thinking. It is not bad to be a passionate person with a sense of life and its limited gifts. The wealth will come when it comes, but armed with the knowledge of basics of living , the youth would know how to invest it and make a brighter future for themselves and the country.

How about changing for others !!

Each individual is made with extreme care and patience by the creator. He also made a tuning in our minds to be able to mingle with other fellow humans. H planted the idea of a family and the idea that in a family the members do things together.

Individuals lose their extreme individuality to give into the liking and mannerism of the family members. This is normal and it also binds the members in a nuclear or joint family together. The parents change with times and adapt to newer ways of relaxation and leisure. Children listen to stories of parents and grandparents way of life and find novel and unique way to emulate them.

Its a  done thing, but one might ask, " why should I change ? "Why  should I do what the others want me to?"

There are two ways people around you react. The most common and the most easy way, is people ignore you. The life of people with whom you share life's joys and sorrows goes on without your involvement, your feedback. The other members of the family find other ways and people to entertain themselves, other methods to express themselves. Their love for you as a person might not diminish but the level of involvement changes.

The other way people usually wives - react is, she changes. She has already changed home, life, name, career, priorities, self friends - everything for the new household. she changes her character and personality to suit the husband, who refuses to change with time, who staunchly believes his way is the only way and there is no other highway.

The wife lives life day to day, doing her duties and chores. The kids surprisingly do well and move     to a happier place and time, but the wife is bound with the unique bond of love - maybe, society - of course, stigma - probably.

Celebrations !!!

What is celebrations !!!

A festival, a birthday, an anniversary, kids passing an important examination in flying colours !!!

But each have a different method, pattern, type of celebration. Its basically an expression of happiness...so each age group celebrates, expresses in a different way.
The idea is to mingle, join in the expression of happiness, fulfillment.

A condo has a dandiya night, a diwali bash, everyone dresses in their sunday or festive best and join in. There is a birthday party kids belonging  to that age group join in a nd have fun. As you grow older the meaning of fun differs, changes.
This is not in dispute, my thought is  when a generation sticks  to a type or method of celebration and expect everyone to follow suit in name of tradition.
Should there be no intermediate path.Take bursting crackers for example, or eating goodies.
As tradition goes Diwali means new dress, eating goodies and bursting a lot of crackers. but with new century problems like asthama, obesity and other lifestyle disorders, should we not tone down out tradition methods and find better, cleaner ways to celebrate.
Maybe we could make and eat fewer goodies, healthier variations.
Light up the homes with diyas and electric lights.
Go out the way to make someone less privileged feel the magic of Diwali.

I saw a picture of the Golden Temple in Amritsar, lit up with Chinese Lanterns, now isn't it a marvelous way to celebrate the 'Festival of Lights'.

Water you have gone too far

You came uninvited, Walked into my life unexpected, I used to relish your presence, Your warm embracing essence, But now its fear that envel...
